South Africa revised traffic laws

Thought it would be a good idea to do this public service and inform everyone about some new tariffs on traffic fines. Now I read though this and most of them are the standard exceeding speed and being drunk at the wheel but some of these are honestly retarded.

Like for example:

  • Overtaking illegally on the left
  • R1000
  • 3pt

What if there is a person moving slowly in the fast lane? Am I meant to sit there and suck it down? And then why is fine R1000 and 3 points? So according to this overtaking on the left or “under taking” is just as dangous as putting 25 people into a 15 person taxi.

Here another hum dinger “Part of driver’s body (elbow) protruding from moving vehicle” you’ll be R250 out of pocket for that one and “Driving in convoy during weekend” this one you’ll get a sizable R500 fine and 1 point. Nice hey!

Then on the other side of the coin they seemed to have nerfed some fines like:

  • Jumping on or off moving vehicle, endangering others
  • R100
  • 0pt

and

  • Driving on the sidewalk
  • R500
  • 1pt

So the way I see it seems they just taking advantage of easy targets and the hard fines like taxi drivers are getting off easy and this with Cape Town’s new “ghost squad” that are driving around in plain cars handing out fines to unsuspecting drivers. Maybe they should rather put money into better things like trying to find my stolen car, yeah that would be a good idea.
