So my boss, Johnathan Beddoes got himself a new iMac 27inch and being a person who likes good tech decided he should add the $900 option of a extra SSD, the shock when he got it was that the SSD is rather, lack of a better word, crap. So to not make a perfect system have a weak boot drive we decided to replace it with a OSZ SSD which has MILES better performance than the Toshiba drive that is in the iMac, so now this journey begins on how to replace this drive.

Before I start, let me begin that this iMac had the drive fitted and apparently if you order it without drive you dont get the cables, tray and power need to fit one, and you’ll need to source that and take out the whole motherboard to fit it.

The first step to this is to follow the one of many tutorials and remove the screen and LCD to get to the meat of your iMac, there are many of these just google/youtube.

your first problem youll find is locating the drive, its actually under your graphics card (yeah took me a second too), and to get to it you have to remove: SATA harddrive, cables over graphics card (be careful) and then remove the grafics card, and then I found it easier to also remove the DVD rom.

Once your get to touch the drive you find that well…. it wont just come out. So I’ll explain all the plans we went though to fit this drive

Plan A: to fit the drive on top of the original one and simple have the old drive as a paper weight inside the machine.

Result: Didnt fit right, even trying it in diffrent positions the clearances are to small inside the machine.

Plan B: To fit it under the DVD rom, as there a air duct space.

Result: Well we looked at it but fears of blocking air scared us off it.

Plan C: To gut the current drive and try fit the new one in the space, bit like Plan A but with more space. When we were doing this we realised the tray the SSD is in glues in tray…… ya your guess is as good as mine as WHY Steve decided to GLUE a tray in that is also held in by screws. So once you painfully and slowly pull the tray off you can then release the drive and replace it.

Follow the steps in reverse to rebuild your machine and boot and install your OS, and then enjoy not having a crappy speed machine all down to changing your SSD.

So from a recent study by super clever neurosurgeons who recon playing games and watching TV shows like Jackass makes young youths compelled to jump onto the roof of their car in an act called car surfing.

Now I’m young and regularly think I can do near impossible stupid things but never in my entire life thought surfing a car would be a good idea. So the people here an idea for the infamous show called Bull Shit “Computer games cause death and destruction is BULL SHIT”.

People at the end of the day are stupid but they certainly don’t need protecting, its in out nature to do stupid things since the beginning of time that’s what makes us human. I mean you can’t run an equilibrium world just doesn’t work even if you lock a human in a padded cell he’ll still find a way to do back flips to hurt himself.

You could also compare this to let say…. milkshake and whenever they release a new flavor people start….. running in front of cars! I bet you R10 that I could build a graph proving that. You also can’t say a jump from 14 to 26 is conclusive proof maybe from 14 to 114 would be a problem but really common this really take a neurosurgeon to find out.

The world must stop trying to put training wheels on my bike when I want to ride it off a cliff!

Well finally South Africa government has woken up that criminals weren’t born in the 1980s and can actual more than carrier pigeons to communicate with each other. So now that they want to control our communications they seemed to have employed a school child to think up their plans to do so in the shaped of a wonderful act called the RICA act.

The RICA act is thought to be similar to the FICA act, they both require a proof of address, and both are said to be in play to curb fraud and crime this is where their similarities end. FICA act is with your bank and the bank is an institution you generally build a relationship with over years, they lend you money extend your payments with and ultimately they come into your house one day (which they own too) and take your couch. RICA act is with your electronic communications, this includes cellphone, email and internet. These are people I pay for a general service, I don’t expect them to extend credit and I certainly don’t trust every small garage operation ISP with my personal details.

Next thing I don’t like and something everyone seems to be looking past is that with this act all these providers need to be tracking activity on your accounts, phone calls, emails, midnight sms to the girl friends will all be nicely stored and logged in a great big server for anyone with the legal permission or the tech know how to go off and check. Doesn’t this remind you of a place of stars and striped that lock of people after sending “anarchy cookbook” to his friends over an email, you were all up in arm over that! Also if you are storing sensitive information surly there should be a guild line or standard to keep to? Credit card companies make the banks jump through hoops before letting them store credit card numbers, same should be for our emails.

Now the another point is that no one told anyone what kind of standard to keep to so once you have all these logs how am I meant to store it so government or police systems can read it to get the information they want. For example do I separate call logs by spaces or commas? No one’s saying so I could just stick random numbers into a file and say that’s the way we stored it figure it out for yourself.

This just shows you how floored the act is, someone in a big room with no technical mind thought it would be a good idea and stuck his signature on a piece of paper to make it happen. Criminals don’t care they don’t follow the law anyway, like the gun licensing, you think if you ban guns people are going to stop shooting each other? NO! Criminals will just find a way. The black market in stolen phones and now sim cards will sky rocket, this is just fueling the industry and I haven’t even mentioned how it’s going to make a serious dent in tourist and rural people.

Come on get a clue and stop the madness the only people this is going to hurt is the corporate giants who make their money selling the accounts everyone

Thought it would be a good idea to do this public service and inform everyone about some new tariffs on traffic fines. Now I read though this and most of them are the standard exceeding speed and being drunk at the wheel but some of these are honestly retarded.

Like for example:

Overtaking illegally on the left

R1000

3pt

What if there is a person moving slowly in the fast lane? Am I meant to sit there and suck it down? And then why is fine R1000 and 3 points? So according to this overtaking on the left or “under taking” is just as dangous as putting 25 people into a 15 person taxi.

Here another hum dinger “Part of driver’s body (elbow) protruding from moving vehicle” you’ll be R250 out of pocket for that one and “Driving in convoy during weekend” this one you’ll get a sizable R500 fine and 1 point. Nice hey!

Then on the other side of the coin they seemed to have nerfed some fines like:

Jumping on or off moving vehicle, endangering others

R100

0pt

and

Driving on the sidewalk

R500

1pt

So the way I see it seems they just taking advantage of easy targets and the hard fines like taxi drivers are getting off easy and this with Cape Town’s new “ghost squad” that are driving around in plain cars handing out fines to unsuspecting drivers. Maybe they should rather put money into better things like trying to find my stolen car, yeah that would be a good idea.
